This fan has a lot of power behind it. It cools off the room so quickly and keeps us at the perfect temperature while we sleep — like I said, Conner sleeps HOT, so we need it! PLACE YOUR ITEMS Unpack with direction and intention. You hopefully will have made sense of your items on the packing side, making these next steps far smoother. Lay down drop cloths (or something similar) and place all items by their categories. KNOW YOUR NEW SPACE Labeling the spaces before unloading the truck makes it easier for people who are helping you to put the boxes in their correct destinations. Unload the truck and make sure to place all boxes in their appropriate rooms as they come into the house. If you’ve packed purposefully (check out our packing blog) and labeled your boxes, you should be able to find their final destinations easily. Make a specific plan for where you want your items to go within a space. We like to use blue tape (when is that not the case?!) because it's non-damaging to surfaces and it's easy to pick up and move as we reconfigure the layout of a space. We write the category of different items on the tape to come up with a visual game plan before we actually implement it. This way, we don’t have to double the work if things aren't where we want them to be the first time. Start with the obvious — things that you know are only going to be in certain areas, like the silverware drawer, plates, and cups; things that make the most sense. Take into account where your dishwasher, stove, and fridge are in the space and plan accordingly with item placement. Think about the flow of a space. Once things are in their obvious spaces, then start planning by priority— What are the most important things in this space? What items do you need to be most accessible? The most visible? As you start answering those questions and placing your items, your space starts to fill in itself. PACKING Not everything being packed is always going to your new home. Sometimes there is a temporary living solution or a storage solution — the more time you are putting into the packing of these items and not just stuffing things into random boxes, the more that you can get track of where everything is! When we have a lot of time to do a packing project, we like to start with the lowest priority space first to allow for a family to use their important spaces for as long as possible. Then, we unpack in the reverse order, unpacking their important items first. (Keep an eye out; we’ll dive more into unpacking in a future blog). Numbering your boxes and making a list of what is in each one is another way to keep track of your inventory if you’re working with a longer timeline! Pro tip: Prepare a weekend/getaway bag for whatever the length is that you’re going to be without your packed items. INVENTORY Once you've purged and made sense of all your items, you can gather an understanding of your inventory as a whole and make a plan for moving forward with the transition of your move. We like to come into our clients’ homes with a plan, asking the right questions for packing with purpose. Take the time to ask yourself those questions and make the most of packing to make your transition easier. Where will each item go in my new home? What items can I put together in the same box that will make sense? What areas of my home are the most important for day-to-day life? LABEL We use our favorite P-Touch Cube Plus label maker for finishing touches in the fridge. Our go-to colors are white on clear or white on black for a nice POP. CATEGORIZE As you are emptying, figure out the natural categories of your items. Snacks, kids’ drinks, cheese, vegetables, leftovers, milk, condiments, etc. This information will come in handy when you’re putting things back in based on your established categories and labeling areas of your fridge dedicated to each. 3. PURGE, BABY If it is expired or will never be used, BYE. This is a guilt-free reset for your space. We want everything to be intentional! PRO-TIP: Shop for the space you have, not for the space you want. This is my number one motto when working with clients. So many times people will say, “But we plan to add on” or “We’ll eventually have more space” and while that’s great, I’m trying to solve your current home organization issues, and to do that, we have to work with what you have. If you have limited fridge space, it is not the time to be packing it in with Costco bulk buys. This will lead to a larger headache and uneaten foods because you can’t see them! Out of sight, out of mind, right? We cannot have that in this space. IDENTIFY YOUR REGULARS Anything that makes it on every shopping list needs a permanent home in your fridge. For my household, that is items like yogurt pouches, applesauce, milks, fruits, vegetables, etc. Knowing exactly where these items will go every time you purchase them will give you peace of mind and keep that fridge organized for the long haul. Also, when you see how much space your regulars take up, you know how much space you have for the “just because” or random buys. I try to not cross that line when grocery shopping because that’s when stuff gets crazy. PRO TIP: If possible, invest in a beverage fridge. I know this isn’t realistic for everyone but this does not need to be an expensive purchase. There are lots of used fridges for sale online, which could bring so much value to your home. I have so many clients who tell me they did a farmhouse style and spent thousands of dollars to be trendy and 3 years later want to change it all. 2. A: Always work within your budget - I would set a plan in place and purchase items when you can afford them. A design plan is essential so that you purchase pieces that will be cohesive. More inexpensive items that are easy to change out like pillows, décor on a coffee table, or shelves and plants can make a big impact on a small budget. Q: Do you consider aestheticism or functionality to be more important? Why? Do you ever have to compromise one for the other? A: I love this question because I love beautiful things and spaces but if it isn’t a functional space you won’t use it.
