How to Get Organized When Overwhelmed

I will be the first to say, life can be chaotic! Priorities can shift, time can go too quickly, and an overwhelming mess can surface before you even know what happened. Next thing you know, you can’t see your closet floor or find anything remotely close to peace in your home. I’ve been there and I know it can seem IMPOSSIBLE at times to overcome that lingering sense of frustration and guilt in order to do something about it.

STEPS TO TAKE WHEN YOU NEED TO TACKLE AN OVERWHELMING SPACE:

START WITH ONE SPACE AT A TIME

Don’t try to tackle more than one project at once. Each project will need your complete attention!

GIVE YOURSELF TIME

Don’t try to rush through or start decluttering if you know you don’t have enough time to accomplish the task, you’ll only create more stress!

TAKE EVERYTHING OUT OF THE SPACE

Sort through the items you removed and place them into different categories based on what they are and what can go together.

Become familiar with everything in that space and understand if it still belongs there once you are finished.

PURGE

The goal is to reintroduce yourself to your items and make sense of what you still love and what you are ready to part with. Create piles of items that are trash, donations, or give to a friend. Once you know you don’t want these items in this space, getting them out of the room will help ease some of the overwhelming feelings associated with the clutter.

GET TO KNOW YOUR SPACE BETTER

Now that your items are no longer in the space, take measurements. This will help you when it comes to product sourcing.

SPACE PLAN FOR A ROUTINE-READY SPACE

What routines can you create within the space to make your day-to-day simpler?

Using blue tape, label the empty space with what you think should go where. It is always best to start with your priority/everyday items. When you know your most used items are accessible and visible, you can start to fill in the less used items throughout the rest of the space.

Once your items have been placed where you want them, the product will help elevate the space and create true homes for your inventory.

TIP: If you only invest in ONE thing for your closet, make it uniform hangers. This is an instant facelift for your space.

ENJOY YOUR NEW SPACE AND PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK. YOU DID IT! 🙌
