1. Keep essentials close!
There are few things worse in the life of a new parent than being awake at 2:00 AM when you are sleep deprived and need to do a diaper change or feed and rock that baby to sleep and you can’t find what you need. You don’t want to have to think about a thing in this moment, let alone search for a clean diaper in the dark.

To make sure this never happens, we always recommend a dresser as a changing table. This creates ample storage to work with (AKA a place to keep all those essentials within arm’s reach!) and it will also grow with your little one through every phase of life.

2. Have a plan for the too small
It’s both a blessing and a curse that babies grow, and grow FAST. To avoid random piles of too small onesies and outfits forming all around the room, keep a bin or basket in the closet to easily toss any clothes your little one grows out of. When this gets filled up it is time to either donate, give to a friend or store for future a baby.

Pro Tip

Label the inside of the drawers to keep track of clothing type and size. And don’t forget your expandable drawer organizers to help keep things neat.

3. Have a plan for the too big
Just like you want to be prepared for when things are too small, you also want to be ready for when baby is big enough for the next size up. You could label bins like I suggested for the too small stuff, or section off the nursery closet by size and do it in the order baby will need them. So in the beginning it’ll newborn items right up front, next three to six months and so on. As things get too small, the sizes your baby needs will work its way to the front of the line. Trust me when I say this makes transitioning between growth spurts much easier.

4. Always have a box for overstock in the closet
No one wants to run out of diapers, wipes or diaper pail refills with no back up. This is absolutely NOT ideal.  So, take any overstock after filling the drawers of your changing table and put it in a box in the closet. This way you’ll always have whatever you need on-hand. Be sure to check your supply every three-five days to avoid running out of anything.

5. Designate a keepsake bin
You’re going to want to hold on to baby’s first everything (especially if it’s baby #1), so be sure to designate a keepsake bin in the closet. It will definitely come in handy for anything you want to keep ranging from special outfits, cards from family members, first pair of shoes, etc. This can be kept up high and out of the way as it wont need to be accessed regularly.
