The Organizing Mindset

I wanted to take a moment to address recurring questions I here from people who feel the task of creating and maintaining an organized home is too daunting. Being a good organizer is not something you’re born with, it is a learned skill. Just like anything else, it takes practice! The most important part of the process is getting in the right mindset to take on your clutter and reclaim your space.

WHERE DO I START?

Start anywhere! Pick an area that brings you frustration but does not completely paralyze you with the thought of tackling it--think junk drawer, jewelry, t-shirts, to name a few. What you do next is the most important part: empty everything! You heard me. Every...last...item. It is important that you are going through everything to determine the following:

  1. Donation/trash items

  2. What belongs in another room

  3. What stays in the space

At this point, the hardest part is done! Now you know your inventory inside and out and you know what items will remain in the space. Go you!

WHERE DO I PUT EACH ITEM?

First things first, sort it all! Put the likes with likes. There is no right way to do it--if certain items make sense to YOU to be put together, that is all that matters. Next comes actual placement. At RíOrganize, we call any space that is very accessible your Prime Real Estate. It is in this area that you place your heavily used items, essentials, and go-tos. The seasonal and occasional items are able to take up those harder to reach areas because they are not accessed as frequently.

DO I NEED TO BUY A TON OF PRODUCT?

Absolutely not. Does product help maximize efficiency in your space? Yes. The more you can contain and categorize your items, the better. There are so many different options when prioritizing necessary product and deciding where to purchase. One thing I cannot emphasize to clients enough is to NOT buy product before starting a project. This becomes a cart-before-the-horse-type scenario. If you have a bunch of product before figuring out your true inventory you will start trying to make your items work for the product instead of the other way around!

AT WHAT POINT DO I HIRE A PROFESSIONAL?

Our job, as professional organizers, is to make this the most seamless process for you. It is our duty to remove the stress and create systems that are simple, beautiful and sustainable. We work with you to customize solutions that work for YOU. There is no “one size fits all” method to what we do. Each project is unique and we work hard to provide you with the perfect fit.

We work with clients for a variety of reasons, including:

  1. They don’t know where or how to start

  2. They are completely overwhelmed by the task

  3. They want someone to work alongside them throughout the process

  4. They know what they want but don’t know how to execute

  5. They simply do not have the time

  6. They want a professional to take care of everything from purge to execution

Whether you hire a professional or choose to tackle this on your own--YOU GOT THIS. Nothing gets finished if it is never started. Grab a cup of coffee (or glass of wine) and make it a fun experience. RíOrganize will be there every step of the way--supporting you, motivating you and in the best cases, working with you!

Happy RíOrganizing,
Ría
